L-carnitine enables the transport of long-chain fatty acids into mitochondria via the carnitine shuttle system: CPT-1 → conversion to acyl-carnitine, transport across membrane, CPT-2 → reconversion to acyl-CoA. This enables fat oxidation and ATP production (McGarry & Brown, 1997).
