Overview

GHK-Cu (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine–copper complex) is a naturally occurring copper-binding tripeptide first identified in human plasma. It is a complex formed between the GHK peptide and copper ions (Cu²⁺), playing a key role in tissue regeneration, skin remodeling, and gene regulation. It is one of the most extensively studied peptides in: dermatology and skin repair, wound healing, anti-aging research (Pickart & Margolina, 2018).

What it is and how it works

GHK-Cu acts as a copper carrier molecule, delivering copper ions into cells and activating multiple biological processes. Mechanisms include: stimulation of fibroblasts, increased synthesis of collagen, elastin, and GAGs, modulation of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), activation of antioxidant enzymes (e.g., SOD), regulation of gene expression (Pickart, 2008).

Effects confirmed by research

1. Skin regeneration and anti-aging

  • increases collagen production, improves elasticity, reduces wrinkles, restores extracellular matrix (Pickart et al., 2015).

2. Wound healing

  • promotes angiogenesis, accelerates tissue repair, reduces inflammation (Maquart et al., 1988).

3. Hair growth

  • stimulates hair follicles, prolongs growth phase, improves scalp circulation (Pickart, 2008).

4. Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects

  • reduces inflammatory cytokines, enhances antioxidant activity, protects against oxidative stress (Pickart & Margolina, 2018).

5. Gene expression regulation

  • activates regenerative genes, suppresses inflammatory genes, affects thousands of genes.

Scientific description

From a scientific standpoint, GHK-Cu is: a copper-binding peptide, a regulator of: collagen synthesis, angiogenesis, gene expression, antioxidant defense.
