Overview

Oxytocin Acetate is a synthetic form of the naturally occurring neuropeptide oxytocin, produced in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. It is a nonapeptide (9 amino acids) that plays a central role in neuroendocrine regulation, social behavior, reproduction, and stress response. Oxytocin functions as both: a hormone (peripheral effects), a neurotransmitter / neuromodulator (central effects). Its actions are mediated through the oxytocin receptor (OXTR), a G-protein coupled receptor (Lee et al., 2009).

Oxytocin binds to OXTR receptors located in: brain regions (amygdala, hypothalamus), uterus, mammary glands, cardiovascular tissues. Receptor activation leads to: increased intracellular Ca²⁺, activation of PLC signaling, downstream muscular or neural effects.
